BACKGROUND: This study aimed to examine the relationship between nursing students' perceived parental child-rearing attitude, ego identity, and college adjustment in Korea and explore factors that influence college adjustment. METHODS: This study surveyed 224 nursing students enrolled in universities located in two regions within South Korea. Data were collected from October 14 to November 31, 2019. Perceived parental child-rearing attitude (paternal emotional warmth, paternal rejection, paternal overprotection, maternal emotional warmth, maternal rejection, and maternal overprotection) and ego identity of nursing students were used as independent variables on college adjustment. Collected data were subjected to correlation analysis using SPSS version 26.0 for Windows. Further, regression analysis was performed on the influence of parental child-rearing attitude and ego identity on college adjustment. RESULTS: Among the parental child-rearing attitudes, paternal emotional warmth (r = .30, p < .001), maternal emotional warmth (r = .38, p < .001), and ego identity (r = .71, p < .001) were positively correlated with nursing students' college adjustment, whereas maternal rejection was negatively correlated with ego identity (r = - .28, p < .001) and college adjustment (r = - .15, p = .025). Regression analysis of the effects of nursing students' perceived parental child-rearing attitude and ego identity on college adjustment, with grade as a control variable, revealed that ego identity (p < .001) had a significant effect on college adjustment, and the higher the ego identity (ß = 0.712), the higher the college adjustment. Further, the explanatory power of explaining college adjustment was high at 49.9%. CONCLUSIONS: The nursing students' perceived paternal emotional warmth, maternal emotional warmth, and ego identity were positively correlated with college adjustment. Additionally, ego identity was found as the influencing factor in Korean nursing students' college adjustment. Therefore, programs to strengthen ego identity should be developed and implemented for college adjustment among nursing students.

Multiple myeloma (MM) is a hematological malignancy caused by malignant proliferation of plasma cells in bone marrow. Over the last decade, the survival outcome of patients with multiple myeloma (MM) has been substantially improved with the emergence of novel therapeutic agents. However, MM remains an incurable neoplastic plasma cell disorder. In addition, almost all MM patients inevitably relapse due to drug resistance. Chimeric antigen receptor (CAR)-modified NK cells represent a promising immunotherapeutic modality for cancer treatment. In this study, NK92 cells were engineered to express the third generation of BCMA CAR. In vitro, BCMA CAR-engineered NK92 cells displayed higher cytotoxicity and produced more cytokines such as IFN-γ and granzyme B than NK92 cells when they were co-cultured with MM cell lines. Furthermore, BCMA CAR-engineered NK92 cells released significantly higher amounts of cytokines and showed higher cytotoxicity when they were exposed to primary cells isolated from MM patients. The cytotoxicity of BCMA CAR NK92 cells was enhanced after MM cells were treated with bortezomib. Additionally, BCMA CAR NK92 cells exhibited potent antitumor activities in subcutaneous tumor models of MM. These results demonstrate that regional administration of BCMA CAR NK92 cells is a potentially promising strategy for treating MM.

Forest therapy involves visiting forests or conducting forest-based treatment activities to improve one's health. Studies have investigated the health benefits of forests, but consensus has not been reached. This study comprised a systematic review and meta-analysis to determine how forest therapy affects the physiological and psychological health of adults. The Cumulative Index to Nursing and Allied Health Literature, Embase, and Medline databases were searched on 31 August 2021. Systematic review and meta-analysis, risk evaluation, GRADE evaluation, and advertisement effect evaluation were performed for each article. The effect size was calculated by dividing blood pressure as a physiological indicator and depression as a psychological indicator. Of the 16,980 retrieved studies, 17 were selected based on the inclusion criteria. Of these, eight studies were included in the meta-analysis. The effect size of forest therapy on improving systolic and diastolic blood pressure was not significant; however, it significantly reduced depression. While the results have limited generalizability due to the inclusion of few studies, the effects of forest therapy on reducing depression have been confirmed. Since the application of forest therapy was heterogeneous in these studies, a moderator effect analysis or subgroup analysis in meta-analysis should be performed in the future.

In this study, gene expression changes in cowpea plants irradiated by two different types of radiation: proton-beams and gamma-rays were investigated. Seeds of the Okdang cultivar were exposed to 100, 200, and 300 Gy of gamma-rays and proton-beams. In transcriptome analysis, the 32, 75, and 69 differentially expressed genes (DEGs) at each dose of gamma-ray irradiation compared with that of the control were identified. A total of eight genes were commonly up-regulated for all gamma-ray doses. However, there were no down-regulated genes. In contrast, 168, 434, and 387 DEGs were identified for each dose of proton-beam irradiation compared with that of the control. A total of 61 DEGs were commonly up-regulated for all proton-beam doses. As a result of GO and KEGG analysis, the ranks of functional categories according to the number of DEGs were not the same in both treatments and were more diverse in terms of pathways in the proton-beam treatments than gamma-ray treatments. The number of genes related to defense, photosynthesis, reactive oxygen species (ROS), plant hormones, and transcription factors (TF) that were up-/down-regulated was higher in the proton beam treatment than that in gamma ray treatment. Proton-beam treatment had a distinct mutation spectrum and gene expression pattern compared to that of gamma-ray treatment. These results provide important information on the mechanism for gene regulation in response to two ionizing radiations in cowpeas.

Cowpea is one of the most essential legume crops providing inexpensive dietary protein and nutrients. The aim of this study was to understand the genetic diversity and population structure of global and Korean cowpea germplasms. A total of 384 cowpea accessions from 21 countries were genotyped with the Cowpea iSelect Consortium Array containing 51,128 single-nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs). After SNP filtering, a genetic diversity study was carried out using 35,116 SNPs within 376 cowpea accessions, including 229 Korean accessions. Based on structure and principal component analysis, a total of 376 global accessions were divided into four major populations. Accessions in group 1 were from Asia and Europe, those in groups 2 and 4 were from Korea, and those in group 3 were from West Africa. In addition, 229 Korean accessions were divided into three major populations (Q1, Jeonra province; Q2, Gangwon province; Q3, a mixture of provinces). Additionally, the neighbor-joining tree indicated similar results. Further genetic diversity analysis within the global and Korean population groups indicated low heterozygosity, a low polymorphism information content, and a high inbreeding coefficient in the Korean cowpea accessions. The population structure analysis will provide useful knowledge to support the genetic potential of the cowpea breeding program, especially in Korea.

There is limited evidence on the relationships of preference for end-of-life life-sustaining treatments [LSTs] and diagnostic contexts like heart failure [HF] or cancer, and patient attitudes toward and perceived susceptibility to use advance directives [ADs]. Thus, this study aimed to compare attitudes and perceived susceptibility between HF patients and community-dwelling patients with cancer, and examine the associations of these variables with their preference for each LST (cardiopulmonary resuscitation [CPR], ventilation support, hemodialysis, and hospice care). Secondary data were obtained from 36 outpatients with HF (mean age, 65.44 years; male, 69.4%) and 107 cancer patients (mean age, 67.39 years; male, 32.7%). More patients with HF preferred CPR than cancer patients (41.7% and 15.9%, χ2 = 8.88, P = 0.003). Attitudes and perceived susceptibility were similar between the two diagnostic cohorts. HF patients and those with more positive attitudes had greater odds of preferring CPR (odds ratio [OR] = 3.02, confidence interval [CI] = 1.19, 7.70) and hospice care (OR = 1.14, CI = 1.06, 1.23), respectively. HF diagnosis and AD attitudes increased the preference for CPR and hospice care, respectively. This suggests that it is important to gain positive attitudes toward ADs and consider diagnostic context to facilitate informed decision-making for LSTs.

PURPOSE: This study was conducted to evaluate the effectiveness of autogenic training on stress responses through a systematic review and meta-analysis. METHODS: A systematic search was conducted using eight core electronic databases (Embase, CENTRAL, Medline, CINAHL, PsycInfo, DBpia, KISS, and RISS). To estimate the effect size, a meta-analysis of the studies was performed using RevMan 5.3.5 program. RESULTS: A total 21 studies out of 950 studies were included in the review, and 11 were included for meta-analysis. These studies showed that autogenic training decreased anxiety and depression, and increased the high frequency of heart rate variability. Calculations to understand the effect of autogenic training on anxiety, through a meta-analysis, observed a reduction effect of anxiety score by 1.37 points (n=85, SMD=-1.37: 95% CI -2.07 to -0.67), in the studies on short-term intervention targeting healthy adults. On the other hand, similar calculations to understand the effect of autogenic training on depression observed, a reduction effect on the depression score by 0.29 point (n=327, SMD=-0.29: 95% CI -0.50 to -0.07), in the studies on long term intervention targeting the patient group. CONCLUSION: Autogenic training is effective for adults' stress management, and nurses will be able to effectively perform autogenic training programs for workers' stress relief at the workplace.

PURPOSE: To investigate the impact of length of autogenic training (AT) use, alone and with the addition of adjunct treatments, on intensity and duration of primary headache in adults age 19 and older. METHODS: We searched articles published in English and Korean from 1926 to 2016. A search of seven domestic and foreign databases was conducted from September 25, 2016 to December 30, 2016 using the search terms "autogenic training," "autogen," "relaxation," and "headache." The search was documented according to the Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Reviews and Meta-Analyses (PRISMA). The search yielded a total of 262 papers; a multi-step screening and selection process ultimately yielded six articles of randomized controlled trials (RCTs) for the systematic review. Cochrane's Risk of Bias Tool was used to evaluate the quality of the selected papers. RESULTS: Five of the six studies demonstrated statistically significant reduction in headache by AT-only or biofeedback-assisted AT. The reviewed studies varied in characteristics of subjects, length of autogenic training and practice, use of adjunct therapies, and use of headache measures. CONCLUSIONS: The small number of studies retrieved in this review, with their variations in AT interventions used, in AT training/practice time, and headache measures used, did not facilitate rigorous evaluation of the effectiveness of specific AT approaches nor of the optimum length of AT practice for reduction of headache. More research is needed on the effectiveness of AT-only for headache, the most effective duration of autogenic training and practice, and the type(s) of headache for which it is most effective.

The study investigated the thermo-physical properties of eugenol encapsulated with beta-cyclodextrin (beta-CD) by molecular inclusion and eugenol release characteristics at various relative humidities and storage temperatures. Particle size, Zeta-potential, thermal transition and morphology of beta-CD-Eugenol complex after freeze-drying measured using Nanosizer, differential scanning calorimeter (DSC) and transmission electron microscopy (TEM), respectively. The particle size, Zeta-potential and inclusion efficiency of encapsulated eugenol presented approximately 340 nm, -34.5 mV and 91.7% after freeze-drying, respectively. The relationship between retention rate of eugenol and time during release was described by a mathematical model of Avrami equation. In these events, the parameter of release mechanism and the release rate constant were rapidly elevated with increasing relative humidity and storage temperature. Furthermore, the Arrhenius activation energy for the release of eugenol decreases with increasing relative humidity and storage temperature.
